One of this year’s big winners at the recently concluded Academy Awards was co-produced by an Abu Dhabi-based media and entertainment company.
Free Solo, a documentary film backed by Image Nation Abu Dhabi, took home the Best Documentary Feature.
The movie follows the death-defying exploits of rock climber Alex Honnold as he attempts to climb El Capitan – a 3,000-foot high vertical rock in Yosemite National Park – with no ropes or safety gear.
Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin directed the film, which to date has grossed $17.2 million at the box-office.
Before its Oscars’ victory, Free Solo has already garnered 43 nominations and 16 awards, including Best Documentary at the prestigious British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs).
Image Nation co-produced the film with Parkes+MacDonald, Little Monster Films and National Geographic.
Free Solo will be screened across the region via National Geographic around spring time this year.
