Fresh Tomatoes To Be Grown Using LED Lights In Abu Dhabi

Fresh Tomatoes

Can fresh tomatoes be grown using LED lights?

Trust the city of Abu Dhabi to come up with innovative ways to do things a little bit differently.

This is even more evident when it comes to addressing the city and the country’s inherent limitations like rainfall (cloud seeding) and food production (vertical farming).

And speaking of farming, the city with the help of Madar Farms is looking to set up a facility that would allow it grow fresh tomatoes using only LED lights.

The indoor facility will cover a massive 5,000 sq m space in Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi, KIZAD.

The facility, which will also grow micro-greens to complement tomato production, is expected to be fully operations by the end of 2020.

All fresh tomatoes produce from the indoor farm will be distributed across the UAE and available for sale.

The tomato farm will be designed by the Dutch firm Certhon, and will be designed with more than 5,000 ultra efficient Philips GreenPower LED fixtures from another Netherlands firm, Signify.

The technology is based on Certhon’s proprietary cooling and automation systems.

Madar Farms is a vertical farming company that grows fresh produce in the UAE through sustainable and non-GMO farming.

The company uses cutting-edge farming methods to help find solutions to the region’s food and water security issues.

Incidentally, the indoor LED-powered tomato farm announcement was made public during the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, which will run until today.
